Introduction to FreeNAS
In this episode Eli the Computer Guy introduces you to FreeNAS, an Open Source Enterprise Grade Network Attached Storage Operating System. FreeNAS is good to use as a low cost File Server, or for storage for Type 1 Hypervisors or other enterprise class storage requirements.
- FreeNAS is built on FreeBSD (Unix)
- You should have a basic understanding of how to use Linux or Unix to use FreeNAS.
- FreeNAS is administered by a GUI web browser interface, but you may need to use the CLI for more complicated tasks.
- Transferring Files from one computer to another can be accomplished by many means. FTP, CIFS/SMB, iSCSI, AFP are some of the protocols an services used. Depending on what you need you will have to configure one or more of these services.
- FreeNAS uses standard Linux/Unix permission structure. When you are practicing 777 permission is the easiest, and least secure, to use.
- When you install FreeNAS it will take up the entire hard drive you install it on. You need at least 2 hard drives to create a FreeNAS server.
- To create a share: First Create a Volume, then set permissions for the Volume, then create the share with the approriate service.
- Make sure the appropriate networking “service” is turned on.
- You can use UFS of ZFS as the file system for the Volume. ZFS is better, but requires at least 8GB of RAM on the system. UFS is generally fine and will work well with 4 GB of RAM.
