Class Notes

1. Permissions
   1. Read, Write, Execute (R-W-X)
   2. You can have Write permission without Read permission
   3. Windows Servers have up to 15 different permissions
2. How  Data is shared
   1. SMB – Server Message Block – Used in standard shared files/ folders
   2. Sync – A copy is created when original is edited and then merged to the original
   3. Library Software – Allows you to check in and out files
   4. Realtime Collaboration – Multiple people can edit a file at the eact same time
3. Web Services
   1. Usually some type of FTP service
   2. More chance of sync conflicts if more then one person is editing doc
4. Work Groups
   1. Security is set on ever computer
   2. Cheaper then buying a “real” file server, but administration can become a nightmare for large deployments
5. Domains
   1. Domain Controllers control security and permissions for all computers in the domain.
   2. Requires a “real” Windows server which may or may not be cost effective depending on the size of the network and the number of changes that need to be made regularly.
