Class Notes

  1. Open Source
    1. Open Source does not mean free!!!
    2. Free Speech vs. Free Beer
    3. Service Contracts may be required
    4. Non commercial use may be free
  2. Types of Server
    1. Per server – Per Physical Server, or Virtual instance of a Server
    2. Per socket – Per CPU in Server
    3. Per core – Per Total Number of Cores in Server.
  3. Access Licenses
    1. Microsoft refers to Access Licenses as CAL’s
    2. Seat – Per device that will connect to the server
    3. Session – Per concurrent connection to the server
    4. User – per user account on the server
  4. Microsoft Licenses
    1. OEM – Cheapest, but only good for 1 computer
    2. Retail – Very expensive, but can be used for life
    3. Volume – Best bet for companies with 10 or more employees.  Allows for ghosting of computers
  5. Pirating
    1. Just don’t do it
    2. If they are too cheap to use legitimate software they’re probably too cheap to pay you.
  6. Final Thoughts
    1. For Volume Licensing always call CDW.  They will give you a free quote so you make sure you’re buying the right licenses.

    How does Microsoft know which hardware am using or which hardware I upgraded to in order charge me? And does the fbi walkup to your company and ask for products license that you are using.
